Projects at Narayan Jagannath Vaidya Government Higher Secondary School

Working within the historic 150-year-old NJV School in Karachi, we had the unique opportunity to design modern, purposeful spaces that honor its rich legacy. Each project—from the Library and Assembly Hall to the Art Gift Shop and Hostel Study Space—was thoughtfully crafted to enhance functionality while preserving the building’s heritage. Through adaptive reuse and sensitive design, we created environments that inspire learning, creativity, and community, all rooted in the school’s enduring spirit.

Assembly Hall

Nestled within the 150-year-old Narayan Jagannath Vaidya Government Higher Secondary School in Karachi, the Assembly Hall by Orphic reimagines history with contemporary flair. Drawing inspiration from the building’s legacy as a post-partition gathering space, the design leverages high ceilings to introduce a mezzanine viewing gallery and seating for up to 200 students. A podium and stage evoke the formality of Sindh assembly halls, while digital displays, maps, and historical photographs animate the walls with Karachi’s rich narrative. Thoughtfully blending heritage and modern technology, this Assembly Hall fosters community engagement, learning, and memorable events in a space that honors the past and serves the present.

Library

Orphic’s Library design at Narayan Jagannath Vaidya Government Higher Secondary School transforms a historic wing into a nurturing knowledge sanctuary. Guided by the school’s vast book collection, the project features floor-to-ceiling open shelving for easy access and closed storage for rare volumes. Embracing sustainability, the design restores and repurposes old teak furniture, salvaged wood for parquet flooring and ceiling cladding, and existing resources throughout. A mezzanine level under lofty ceilings offers private study zones, while varied seating and clear sightlines encourage exploration and collaboration. This Library harmonizes heritage preservation with modern learning needs, inspiring students to engage deeply with knowledge.

Study Space for Hostel Students

Orphic’s Study Space for hostel students at NJV School repurposes unused shipping containers into a vibrant 1,000 Sqft hangout and study hub. Stacked at an angle to create an outdoor terrace above, the design delivers a modern, inviting environment that meets informal learning needs. Eco-friendly upcycling informs material choices, while large windows and flexible furniture foster natural light and social interaction. This transformation not only optimizes footprint but also injects a playful, contemporary spirit into the historic campus. By combining adaptive reuse with student-focused design, the Study Space nurtures creativity, community, and well-being beyond regular school hours.

“Totally focused on tools to enhance and help your content shine. We have created this theme thinking only in options helpfully for the daily needs in a creative environment like an agency,”

I knew everything…been there, done that. She was in the moment,
I was in the past. She was mindful. I was mindless.

The Design Narrative:

  • Project Overview
“Set within a serene expanse of 40 acres of lush greenery, the Akhuwat College Library is more than a building—it is a symbol of Akhuwat’s unwavering commitment to knowledge, growth, and intellectual empowerment. Designed with reverence for the existing campus identity, the library’s architecture seamlessly merges tradition with innovation.”
  • Architectural Vision
“The library’s exterior exudes a quiet authority, crafted to evoke a sense of wonder and purpose. With a bold yet graceful presence, the design asserts the library’s role as the intellectual heart of the campus. Contemporary materials and advanced construction methodologies are harmonized with contextual elements to maintain architectural continuity across the campus.”
  • Interior Experience
"Crossing the threshold into the library reveals a thoughtfully curated space that prioritizes warmth, inclusivity, and inspiration. The interiors are designed to foster both focused study and collaborative engagement. A variety of well-lit reading areas, comfortable seating, and interactive zones support diverse learning styles. Whether in open commons or quiet corners, students are encouraged to connect, reflect, and grow."
